Visitors are often looking for a five star Portland hotel when they travel to the state of Oregon. Some people come to camp out in the parks while others come to get in a few rounds of golf in between business meetings. No matter what the reason for the visit, the Pacific Northwest draws guests in each year with pleasant weather and plenty of things to do.

As more and more people become environmentally conscious, Portland continues to grow in popularity. The city has been awarded the 'Greenest City in America' award on several different occasions and consistently stays on the list of the 'World's Top Ten Greenest Cities'. Part of this distinction is the result of the work done by the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability. Events, fairs and tours are held throughout the year and demonstrate what people can do to be more resourceful as well as energy efficient. When you make a reservation at a five star Portland hotel, chances are that you will see some of the green practices over the course of your stay.

Because of the attitude of sustainability in Portland, businesses hold conventions and meetings here to learn more about their own field as well as the example set by local businesses and residents. Before planning any event, you can meet with coordinators that will help you set up recycling bins as well as teach you how to use the leftover scraps of food for local composting. There is no other place in the United States that offers this type of experience for businesses and meeting attendees.

Part of the emphasis on greener living comes from wanting to protect the environment. When you look around Portland it is easy to see what everyone is working so hard for. Get out of that five star Portland hotel room and take a hike along one of the trails in a local park. There is no better way to get a close up look at nature. If you don't feel comfortable walking around alone you can sign up for a nature tour with one of Portland's naturalists or biologists. Be sure to bring binoculars if you plan on bird watching and a camera if you want to catch some moments with the flora and fauna of the area.

When you aren't enjoying the outdoors and the weather, there is still a lot left to do. Both professional and semi-professional teams call Portland, home. The Trailblazers are part of the NBA and play in the Rose Garden arena. You can also check out the Winter Hawks hockey team, the Beavers baseball team and the Timbers soccer players. If you just aren't into 'traditional' sports', you may be interested in checking out the Rose City Rollers at a roller derby game. After experiencing any one of these sports, including cheering for your favorites and enjoying a few hot dogs and popcorn, you might be ready to head back to your five star Portland hotel to get a good night's sleep.

If you find that you still have some time left in the "Rose City" and you want to make the most of it, you may wonder what to do next. There is an easy answer to that. You can stop by the International Rose Test Garden. Even if you don't know a lot about flowers, the view itself is breathtaking. There are over 8,000 roses to see and the best part is that it won't cost you a thing. Along the same lines of garden viewing, you also might want to stop by the Lan Su Chinese Garden. While admission is charged, it is worth the price to see an "authentically built Ming Dynasty style garden".

Whether you are traveling though the city for business or fun, you don't want to miss out on the farmer's markets. There are at least three located in different areas and there is no better place to get fresh and lush produce. Depending on where your five star Portland hotel is located and the time of year for your visit, check with the concierge to find the closest location in operation. Take a break from the cafes and restaurants and opt to have lunch at the market instead. Before you leave, take a few flowers and press them into a book to take home as a reminder of your trip to Portland.
